The Yale Women's Regatta took place on October 18-19, 2003. Nineteen teams participated in this 420 event, including Wisconsin, the only Midwest team. Overall, Wisconsin took an impressive fourteenth place against the tough East Coast competition. The team of UW women sailors left on Thursday night, October 17, for a fifteen-hour drive out to Connecticut. The girls were excited to sail because the competition is always great at women's regattas. There is something really neat about sailing with all girls. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their road trip, especially admiring the new $20 bills. Kelly commented, "Yay, they have glitter on them!" There were light winds from the north on the first day with temperatures comfortable in the low 50s. "A" division skipper sophomore Kelly Ferron and crew, senior Tina Weber, kept up with the competition and ended the day in twelfth. "B" division skipper Theresa Phillips, a junior, and crew senior Kari Sachs also sailed well, placing 5th and 10th in their second set races. Junior Amy Schultz also came along to Yale for the weekend. The sixth "B" race of the day was cut short by a lack of breeze, so six "A" division races and five "B" division races were completed. Sailing was smooth, with only one general recall, no protests or breakdowns. On the second day there were shifty NE winds 5-10 knots, lots of rain, and a high temperature in the upper 40s. Four "A" division races sailed and five B division races were sailed. Sailing out East is always a great leaning experience for the women sailors. This weekend we saw how aggressive sailors have to be at mark rounding and starts in order to keep up with the best collegiate women sailors. - Tina Weber
