| regatta report - Women's Qualifiers 2005
The women qualified for Nationals by taking first place in the Women’s Qualifiers April 23rd and 24th at Diamond Lake Yacht Club. The event, which was held by Notre Dame, started out cold and windy, with sleet and snow. Despite the bad weather, the ladies made out with some impressive finishes, scoring a total of ten 1st places between the two divisions, over 14 races. Anne Porter/ Anna Bargren/ Patti Schmidt sailed in A division, totaling 11 points after 7 races. Liz Prange/ Kelsey Cramer sailed Bs, getting an impressive 9 points! Amy Schultz also came as Schmidt’s crew. The first day the wind started out around 10, with huge shifts and puffs coming off of the shore. Porter and Bargren went out for the first two A sets, and the Schmidt was subbed in as the wind picked up and gusts increased. Schmidt did an impressive job keeping the boat flat in the fluctuating conditions, and was deemed the hiking powerhouse of the weekend. Prange and Cramer stuck it out and did a great job handling the increase in wind. During the first A races, Wisco, Minnesota, and Michigan fought back and forth for the top places, but as the regatta continued, Wisco arose as the dominating force. In Bs, Miami of Ohio put up a good fight as well, and took second in that division. As the first rotation was about to end on Saturday, sailing was postponed as many boats started capsizing in the cold weather. Wisco endured only a few capsizes, two of which occurred in sequence. On Sunday, the conditions were very similar to the day before. The last B race was sailed to finish the rotation, and then the regatta was called. Congratulations to the Wisco women who took a first by a 18 point margin, and along with Minnesota, who took 2nd, headed to Nationals! -Anna Bargren
