regatta report - Timme Angsten 2004

Thanksgiving Weekend -
After Thanksgiving with our families, the Wisco team met down in Chicago after a pep talk from coach Bret Liebmann. We stayed about 15 minutes from the sailing site in David Schultz’s apartment. Friday morning began overcast with winds 5-12 out of the south. Courses were WL5 (WM2 if you’re from the inlands). Anne Porter and Anna Bargren sailed A division and started the day with a bullet. Scott Eisenhardt and Kelsey Cramer started B division. Unfortunately, race 4A saw nine boats scored as OCS, including Wisconsin. Aaron Mann and Liz Prange ended the day in B division. Saturday was very cloudy, with winds gusting to 18 still out of the south and with a lot of chop. Racing put us solidly in third. Matt Schmidt and Michele Lorenz sailed A division for the day. In our final set Aaron managed to break the traveler bar and separate the thwart from the boat, of course getting breakdown points, because apparently Liz could not just sit on the board box. Saturday night we all piled back into the vans for a wonderful Timmes dinner/dance. Sunday morning winds were out of the southwest and very shifty, allowing for famous Timmes courses (such as triangle WLWLW) and changing points of sail. The highlight of the day came in the last race when Scott lapped another school, thus giving Wisco the first and last wins of the regatta, as well as a few in the middle. Following tradition, Anne was promptly thrown in the water. Overall, Wisco ended up third, behind Boston College and Michigan. We would like to thank David Schultz for housing, the Eckert family for awesome Chicago deep dish pizza, and Paul Exner and Bret Liebmann for coaching, as well as all the alumni and supporters who gave us the biggest and loudest shore crew.
