As the mere name of the host school for the Thompson Trophy Intersectional implies, the attending Wisconsin team members Tristan Sather, Rob Pickens, Leslie Kopatz and Tim Shea faced a long trip well before any sailing was to be done. With Tim flying out, the other three found themselves with 1060 miles between them and a great regatta experience and a wonderful UW Fleet Van to get them there. A full account of all the happenings of the caffeine-fueled 18 hour ride from Madison to New London, CT aside, Wisco arrived tired, relieved and ready to sail (after some sleep). Saturday morning, after meeting up with Tim at the Conn College sailing site, the team set out on the Thames River (said "THAY-mms") against some of the finest sailors in the ICSA - including Laser National Champion Andrew Campbell (Georgetown) and US Sailing Team Members Mikee Anderson (USC) and Stu McNay (Yale). The temperature was chilly and the wind moderate on the Thames, which had the privilege of hosting two major regattas - NEISA Women's happening within eyeshot, just up the river at the Coast Guard Academy - as clouds rolled in and barometric pressure fell. The day saw lots rain and good breeze as after the first set of Rob sailing with Leslie (A) and Tim with Tristan (B), the crews were swapped in order to give a better balance of weight and allow for more effective hiking across the board. A total of ten tough races were sailed, seeing Wisconsin finish primarily in the high teens against two extremely talented fleets. An exausted team settled in for a restful night after a wet and wild first day. Sunday, the weather was clearer, but the wind was stronger, with big, consistant breeze coming down the river all day. The seven races sailed nearly completed a full fleet rotation, and as the day wore on, Wisconsin continued to improve its finishes. Arriving home after another long van trip that saw a freak late-April snowstorm in Ohio, team members reflected that although unable to stay with the top teams, they were consistently keeping up with tight Eastern fleets.
