| regatta report - sugar bowl womens 2003
The Wisconsin Women, along with the coed team, traveled to New Orleans December 30-31 to compete in the Sugar Bowl sponsored by Nokia. The regatta was held in 420s. The women were joined by three other women's teams as well as 10 coed teams all on the same starting line. With big waves and medium wind, both days started with great learning conditions for the Midwest sailors. Wisconsin took the lead early in the regatta with Anne Porter and Kari Sachs winning both the races in the first A set. Liz Prange and Carolyn Soling stayed out for an on-the-water rotation and continued Wisco's winning with two firsts, a second, and a fourth. Wisconsin held their lead, winning 10 out of the 16 races. Wisconsin proudly accepted the first place trophy which was given to senior Kari Sachs for her leadership and dedication to the team. Anne Porter and Kari Sachs won low points, receiving a sugar bowl championship commemorative watch. Anne Porter also won the Rees Family Memorial plaque. Overall, the regatta allowed our team to practice in the waves and brave them with not much wind. It also gave some of our freshmen a chance to sail out of the Midwest and compete against teams from New York to California. - Anne Porter
