September 18th & 19th - Women’s team race: (Anne Porter) Wisconsin was proud to send a Women’s Team in addition to a Coed and Freshman Team to the Streufert Cup Team Race Regatta. Boats were skipper Liz Prange and crew Kelsey Cramer, skipper Teresa Phillips and crew Amy Schultz, and co-skippers Anne Porter and Anna Bargren. The girls, dressing their part in red skirts during the races, had a great start, winning their first four races. Unfortunately they later lost to the Wisconsin Coed team, a close race with a finish of 2-4-5. They also fell to the Minnesota A team, but proved to be tough competition. After the first day, they advanced to the Final Four with a record of 6-2. Also advancing to the Final Four were Minnesota A, Wisconsin Coed, and Marquette. In the Final Four, the Women went 2 and 4, losing twice in a double round robin to Wisconsin Coed and Minnesota, and beating Marquette twice. Sunday saw more wind, with a breeze of 13mph, gusting to 18mph. Overall, the Women ended up third in the regatta to Minnesota A and Wisconsin Coed. We would like to thank the Fishman family for hosting an excellent Saturday night barbeque, and the Hester Family for providing breakfast, brownies, and housing for 24. Freshman Team Race: (Patti Schmidt) After a week of training in team race tactics, a new experience for many of the Wisco Freshman team, we headed up to Wayzata Bay, MN for a trial run. The team consisted of the following pairs: Anders Hester/Brianne Zechlinski, Rob Pickens/Ben Dickey, Patti Schmidt/ Brett, and Tristan Sather/Mike Stephenson, who rotated through the sets. Starting strong early on Saturday morning and clad in the black Wisconsin Full Moon trucker hats, they dominated Carlton. Later that morning after watching some intense team races, they faced off with Marquette and St. Thomas, losing by a small margin both times. Soon after, they attempted to overthrow the Wisco feminine regime, but came up short. The reach legs of the triangle courses allowed for planing in the big puffs as the day continued, providing an opportunity for an upset against our very own Wisconsin Coed team! The freshmen really pulled out in the final seconds of the race with Patti Schmidt/Brett leading through the finish and Rob Pickens/Ben Dickey beating out the opposition for a 3rd place. Needless to say the whole team was shocked! They completed the day with 2 more wins and a loss to the eventual champions, Minnesota A, placing them in the Consolation bracket. Sunday’s similar conditions looked promising until they refaced St. Thomas—let’s just say that each of the freshman learned new rules of the game. After the tough loss they handily pulled out 2 more wins and finished 2nd in the consolation. Thanks again to the Fishman’s for the grill out and the Hester’s for the desserts, breakfasts, and places to sleep. Men's Team Race (Joe Zechlinski) The Wisconsin Coed team showed great depth with Matt Schmidt, James Dunham, Joe Zechlinski, Scott Eisenhardt, Aaron Mann, and Tom McGrath all skippering. Crewing were Jen Conant, Jake Fishman, Missy Barry, and Michelle Lorenz. True Wisconsin spirit was shown by way of obnoxious spotted cow hats sported by the entire squad. The lineup changed often based on the opponent, allowing everyone to get equal sailing time. An opening series of wins built confidence for the team on Saturday morning, with the first losses occurring at the end of the day. Losses were against the winning Minnesota Maroon team, as well as Marquette. In the closest race of the day, a losing combination in the final beat against the Wisconsin Women team was converted to a winning 1-3-6 after the girls received a 360 penalty seconds from the finish. A final record of 10-4 earned a 2nd Place finish for the Coed team
