regatta report - struefert cup 2003
In the only team racing event on the fall season, Wisco sent an unprecedented three
teams to sail against the best team racers of the MCSA. Packed up in four vans, we
caravanned the five hours to arrive at the U. Also attending the regatta were teams
from Minnesota, Carlton, Iowa, Miami of Ohio, and St. Thomas. Leading by example, our
captains insisted we leave early in order to get the team plenty of rest in preparation
for the next day's racing. Minnesota was kind enough to find someone that would host
all 18 of us. We filled the entire house with ease.
The sailing site was located at Wayzata Yacht Club, about a thirty minute drive from
campus. The three Wisco teams coined names in order to differentiate the different
teams. Wearing team hats bought at a gas station during the drive, Wisconsin A&M was
comprised of John Porter and Anna Bargren, Jonathan Seltzer and Kate Hannon, and Joe
Zechlinski and Carolyn Soling. UWI was represented by Anne Porter and Christine
Niedziela, James Dunham and Cliff Hogan, and Liz Prange and Jake Fishman who amazingly
volunteered to join the team a mere hour before we left. Rounding out the group was
Wisco's ultimate show of depth: the all Freshman team, Wisconsin KK, made up of Matt
Schmidt and Kelsey Cramer, Aaron Mann and Lauren, and Scott Eisenhardt and Amy
Schultz- Scott is actually a sophomore, but spending his first year on the team and
at Wisconsin.
Wayzata proved to be a beautiful sailing site, bringing great wind 10 - 15. Every
team sailed each team once in the first round robin. When not sailing, we relaxed
on a floating pier anchored just off the race course. This facilitated quick exchanges
between each set. At the end of the first round robin, four teams qualified for the
Final Four, while the other five went to the consolation bracket. In the final four
were undefeated Wisconsin A&M, Minnesota's A Team with only 1 loss, St. Thomas, and
Wisconsin KK, both with only three or four losses. UWI worked at finding its groove,
looking for better success in the consolation round. And success they found. UWI
went undefeated the next day, sailing to fifth place overall. The Final Four outcomes
were exactly the same as the first round robin, leaving Wisconsin A&M undefeated and
the outright winner! The freshman were unable to beat Minnesota, but still managed
to finish a very respectable third.
Even better than the amazing final results (1st, 3rd, and 5th!!!!), the regatta was
an awesome bonding experience for the entire team. It proved to be a great beginning
to a fantastic fall season for Wisco.
The team would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Seltzer for their hospitality for our
Saturday night barbeque.
