regatta report - sloops qualifier 2003
Saturday September 27 started out cold, grey and windy (˜18-22), and pretty much
stayed that way. The trip included 4: John Porter (skipper), John Rather (crew),
Jonathan Seltzer (heavy crew), and Anna Bargren (light crew). Upon arriving, the
team encountered several problems before even getting out on the water, such as the
boat not being rigged for a spinnaker. But soon all was ready and John, John and
Jonathan headed out for the first race … only to hear the announcement that spinnakers
would not be allowed for the time being because it was too windy. This was apparently
good reasoning because not 5 minutes had passed on the water before MN lost its entire
standing rigging. On the first start, there was a general recall, and as the boats
were turning back, the team decided to tighten the jib halyard. Jonathan started to
crank the halyard when the lever snapped slitting his wrist. They quickly got him to
the race committee boat for medical attention, and then raced to shore to pick up the
unprepared Anna for a quick crew switch as the sequence clock was running. However,
even after missing the start by about 45 seconds, WI caught up to the other boats
during the race, finishing with a second. Back at the docks, Jonathan was treated
for a minor cut that just looked bad, and jokes started circulating about the guy
from WI who tried to commit suicide after a terrible first start. Anna stayed in
and hiked a lot with John and John for the next race, and Jonathan went back in on
the third. After many more breakdowns, the race committee decided it was one too
many at around 2:30 and ended the day at four races out of 12. Sunday was much
warmer and sunny, despite the predictions for rain. The wind was much less also,
so John and the other teams were able to sail the spinnakers with their newly
acquired rigs. Triangle courses continued and rotations ran smooth, so that by 3pm,
7 of the 8 races needed to finish the regatta were completed. The last race of the
day was a bit unusual as well.
First the predicted storm threatened nearby, so Jonathan switched in as the wind picked
up. Then the race committee, apparently remembering the frightening conditions of the day
before, decided that the spinnakers would again be prohibited. No sooner had the fleet
reached the windward mark when the wind died completely, leaving the sloops struggling
their way up the river without spinnaker. Although the team had to throw the anchor
twice to avoid going backwards spirits remained very high among all the teams, as talking
and singing could be heard from shore for the entire run. Many of the top teams had very
close scores, making it an undecided, competitive and fun regatta up until the very end.
This win means that the team will be heading to NY for the ICSA Sloop Championships at
Eckert College November 7-9!!
