On September 25th and 26th, the UW Sailing Team participated in the Davis Cup Regatta, hosted by the University of
Iowa and held on Lake McBride. The weekend was beautiful—sunny and warm, with highs around 75, and hardly any clouds in the
sky. Unfortunately this weather was accompanied by almost no wind. Saturday the wind was shifty all day and only reached 5
mph. Sunday was not any better, with winds only reaching 3 mph. Six races were completed (4 A-fleet and 2 B-fleet) on
Saturday and two (2 B-fleet) on Sunday. Courses included triangles and windward-leewards. Races were very long, and sailing
effectively was difficult, due to the extreme lack of wind. Placement in the races was sporadic... Out of 13 teams from 12
different schools, however, UW placed third. Skippers included Patti Schmidt, James Dunham, and Rob Pickens. Their crews
were David Bunck, Jen Conant, and Mike Stephenson respectively. Adam Cummings accompanied them as the “regatta mom.” Even
though the wind was frustrating, the team had an interesting weekend!
